This blog is about one woman’s personal adventures during a continuing 10-year search for artistic treasures on the forbidden island of Cuba…experiences so rich in cultural pathos that, by comparison, we in “the north” seem to move around in our world almost without touching it.
My name is Marjorie Pravden, Scottish-American and variously in life, a book sander, marathoner, travel writer, artist, art teacher and art dealer; with a Masters degree from UF, a former broadcasting career, an insatiable hunger for global travel, and a love for Cuban art and all things Cuban.
The love of Cuban art was the inspiration for opening our “brick and mortar” (and online) gallery, Cuba! Gallery of Fine Art in Melbourne, Florida. The works are original and created by contemporary, renown and emerging artists who live in Cuba. To many Cubans on this side of the Florida Straits, the gallery is a touchstone for their homeland. The century-old walls suck up the emotion of their unique touching stories and give it back to us in unexpected moments. They will also influence this blog.
