Since 1951, Jose Lopez Alvarez (Lopito) had been welll known as a cinematographer and producer of television documentaries.
Then, in 1966, he surprised everyone with a solid exhibition of 32 impressive paintings. Impressionistic, rich with color and movement, his landscapes were powerful and refreshing without human presence. They had not known he had studied painting and sculpture at the most prestigious art school in Cuba, San Alejandro Academy.
83 years of age and still living in Havana, the Cuban Van Gogh can no longer paint. And because he has received the National Medal of Culture, it is believed that when he passes, his works will not be allowed to leave the homeland. |
